Princess the pocket rocket

November 27, 2014

If anyone ever says that a horse is too small to jump a fence then all at Dason Court would refute their premise in no uncertain terms. Carhue Princess stands at just under 15 hands - or around their - and jumped around Towcester's fences and took on the unforgiving hill with admirable enthusiasm. Her problem is that she is usually too enthusiastic. It seems that she respects and most importantly enjoys the challenge of the larger obstacles. Tom Scudamore always commented that when riding a smaller horse, like the diminutive Northern Starlight, they are largely a safer conveyance as they get back on their hocks; respect and measure their fences in an accurate manner.

Carhue Princess and Ben had a cracking round on Sunday and in doing so beat geldings for the first time. I hope she can continue in this way as consistency has not always been her strong suit. The thing that seemed to catch her out at Fontwell - seemingly in the hottest three runner mares' only chase ever - is that she struggled over the longer trip in the ground. Thus it seemed a case of cutting her back in trip on the more testing going. Sunday also played host to the chasing debut of Kaki De La Pree at Exeter. He delighted us with the way he jumped but got tired in the closing stages and Felix was not hard on him when beaten. He is an exciting prospect and who loves soft ground so it is certainly his time of year. Another to perform well was Katarrhini who belied her inexperience in finishing fourth on her racecourse debut over hurdles. Lewis also ran with immense credit at Ffos Las in attritional conditions. This strapping future 3 mile chaser will come on a lot for the run and experience. Although we regularly meet the crossbar; the horse's are running to a good level of form and provided they return fit and healthy then there is always another day.
